As the winter holidays come to a close and holiday lights come down from houses, people can get the blues. But fear not, because there are still plenty of Philly cheesesteak restaurants to try, activities to do, and beauty to see throughout January. We have talked about fun summer and fall activities the Benjamin Franklin Parkway has held to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The winter is no exception, with the stunning outdoor exhibition Winter Fountains to bring the whole family to enjoy.
Winter Fountains features stunning, surreal video projections on four large domes located along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The installations can be found in Aviator Park, outside the Rodin Museum, at the Residences of Park Towne Place, and at the Spring Garden Triangle. During the daytime, the foundations are shimmering glass dome displays and are a great place to eat lunch after grabbing a Philly cheesesteak.
The installations are inspired by the work of Franklin himself, with electricity acting as the central theme of the show. They are also influenced by their surroundings, borrowing imagery from The Franklin Institute’s Fels Planetarium, the Academy of Natural Sciences at Drexel, the paintings from the Barnes Foundation, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The exhibition, commissioned by the Association for Public Arts and the William Penn Foundation, was created by multimedia artist Jennifer Steinkamp. The free-to-attend exhibition is open now through March 18, 2018 and is part of the 14-month celebration of Parkway 100.
The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University is one of the many museums along the Parkway offering special exhibitions to celebrate the Benjamin Franklin Parkway’s 100-year anniversary. Until October 2018, the Academy is debuting an exhibition detailing the museum’s cultural significance and its future in A Peak at the Past, A Look Toward the Future. Other Parkway 100 activities to attend during the month of January include Corridor of Culture: 100 Years of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway at the Free Library of Philadelphia and Paul Cret and Dr. Barnes at the Barnes Foundation.
