With Christmas coming full speed ahead, it’s time to make a list (and check it twice) of the best holiday activities Philadelphia has to offer. There are the classics, such as the Macy’s Christmas Light Show and Comcast Holiday Spectacular, but if you’re looking for something a little different, bundle up, sharpen your skates, and enjoy one of the Philadelphia outdoor ice skating rinks. Blue Cross RiverRink and the Rothman Ice Rink offer spectacular views of the city and are open to skaters of all ages and skill levels!
Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest
Located on the Delaware River, the Blue Cross RiverRink has been around for 23 years and this year is its fourth season as Winterfest. The only outdoor regulation-sized ice rink in Philadelphia, the RiverRink has it all: outdoor fire pits, warming cabins, tasty treats from the Franklin Fountain, and a ski lodge with a bar. If you’re making your visit a family event, there is also a kids’ lodge with arcade games and more.
The rink’s fourth annual tree lighting just wrapped up this past weekend, but there is still time to grab tickets for a Skate with Santa! Now through December 18, you can join Santa on the ice and take a family picture. There’s no better way to get into the Christmas spirit.
The Rothman Ice Rink at Dilworth Park
Be one with the heart of Philadelphia by ice skating at City Hall! Coming back for its third season, the Rothman Institute Ice Rink at Dilworth Park is a perfect place to ice skate – they even offer lessons. Once you wrap up your time on the ice, step into the Rothman Cabin, where you can thaw your bones with hot chocolate, seasonal cocktails, and more.
This year, there’s more holiday fun at Dilworth Park. Adjacent to the ice rink, you can check out America’s Garden Capital Maze. There are dozens of plants, topiaries, and lights, making it a gorgeous place to walk around at night.
After you’ve gotten your fill of skating, come warm up with a cheesy, delicious sandwich from Geno’s Steaks!
